Typhoon Omar, Aug. 28, 1992

Omar was the most powerful, and costly, storm to hit the island since Typhoon Pamela in 1976. The storm occurred during an unusually active and damaging season across multiple storm basins.

On Aug. 24, Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida and swept over Louisiana, causing 65 deaths and roughly $27 billion in damage. Then Omar struck Guam a few days later, and on Sept. 11, Hurricane Iniki slammed into Kauai, killing six people and leaving 8,000 homeless.

About 200 people were treated for injuries on Guam. Power was out for several days in some areas, weeks in others. Water was also out, and tanks were placed in villages so residents could collect water for drinking and cleaning.

But Omar was just the first in a series of storms to hit or brush by the island in 1992.

A week after Omar struck, typhoon Ryan developed but then veered away from the Marianas.

Typhoon Brian passed over Guam on Oct. 21, causing minor damage, followed by Typhoon Elsie on Nov. 3, which passed south of the island.

The eye of Typhoon Hunt passed 10 miles north of Guam on Nov. 18, and the eye of Typhoon Gay crossed the island on Nov. 23.
