Once the high winds start, stay in your shelter
Follow these tips to keep yourself and your family safe during the storm:
- Stay off the street. High winds and flooded roads make driving extremely dangerous. Tree branches and other debris increase the danger.
- Stay inside. Do not open doors or windows, and do not go outside to adjust anything.
- Do not go outside if the eye passes over the island. There's no way to know for sure how long the eye passage will last at any given location, and when the winds start again, they will be extremely intense.
- While inside, stay away from windows and sliding glass doors. Keep to the interior of the building.
- Do not open the refrigerator. If it stays closed, you can keep your food for up to four hours after the power is out.
- No matter how long the storm lasts, do not use charcoal grills or other outdoor-only cooking methods indoors.
- Stay put until you get the all-clear from authorities. Although the strongest winds might have passed - dangers remain. More people die after storms than during storms.
